How to convert a flash drive into a RAM

Sometimes we need a little bit of extra RAM required in order to run a very high specification program. This is not a wise idea to invest in any type of equipment which might be used occasionally and rest of the time it's just idle. In this post I gonna tell you about how to convert a thumb or flash drive into RAM. This trick is also useful in those systems which have very low system configuration. Although if you use high spec. programs on daily basis, then I'll prefer you to buy a RAM rather than a virtual RAM method.

So, here's the first question popped out, why don't we use hard disk drive instead of flash drive for this virtual RAM area(just like SWAP area in *nix)? Well, the answer is you are already using some of your HDD space into virtual RAM but this is only for the fail safe conditions and extremely slow. HDD is a sequentially access drive while RAM is random access device. This means that RAM allocate space to a program in a random fashion while HDD do the same sequentially. This explanation would turn into an entire chapter of a book if I started talking about functioning of RAM & HDD. Now, let's get our hands into practice.

  1. First thing you need is a formatted pen drive and name a easy recognizable name & insert it.
  2. Now open the properties of the pen drive and click on the readyboost tab. Here, in this case I've named my pen drive "VRAM".
  3. Now here you can utilize your pen drive space to speed up your system. Click on Use this device and reserve the space for the virtual memory. Remember always leave a little bit of extra space as free memory. Here in this example, I'm using 8 GB pen drive, whose actual size is 7272 MB & I'm allotting 7200 MB for this purpose.
  4. Click apply and OK. You're all set and just restart your system.
  5. You can verify this by ensuring that there must be a ReadyBoost file present in the pen drive.
  6. While your pen drive is in this mode, you can not use it store data or transferring files. So, gain back to it's original state, you can simply click the Do not use this device and apply.
