How to hide entire drive in windows

Sometimes you've very sensitive data or information which you don't want to share with anyone. You may simply hide those files from visibility/view options in Control Panel. Now just imagine a situation you have a lot of data to hide, let's say, hundreds of Gigabits, now you gonna select and start hiding every individual files or folders. This might take a lot of your precious time and also there is a slight chance of getting caught for any suspicious activities.

Now there's is another way to protect your data from other users sharing a same system. Instead of hiding individual files/folders, why shouldn't you go for a big bounty and hide entire drive. Hiding entire drive is possible in Windows. DISKPART is a windows utility which allows user to manage the Hard Drive. Copy all the sensitive data/information in a drive and then follow the following procedure to hide drive:

Hiding the Drive

  • Open the Command Prompt(CMD) as administrator and type diskpart
  • Now type list volume. This shows all the drives present in your system with their Ltr(Drive letter) which is assigned by the system.
  • Now, to hide entire drive, you need to remove the drive letter and to remove assigned drive letter, you first need to select that drive.
  • Select the volume you want to hide by select command and remove the drive letter by remove command as shown in image below.
  • Now you can verify whether your drive is actually hidden or not in my computer.

Unhiding the Drive

  • There is no such a big deal to make your drive accessible again. just open the diskpart utility again and select the volume and reassign a drive letter to it. Snapshot below depict the procedure.

Sometimes you might get Virtual Disk Service Error. Sometimes this error occurs when you trying to hide that drive which contains OS of your PC. This is because windows maintains a page file and some virtual memory which not allows to modify its contents. Forcing to hide this drive can corrupt your OS or crash your system. So, It is a good practice to hide other drives/volumes rather than main drive which contains OS files(mostly the common letter for it is C).
